Endocarditis is an infection of the inner lining of the heart’s chambers and valves.

It generally occurs in patients with altered and abnormal heart architecture, in combination with exposure to bacteria through trauma and other potentially high-risk activities involving transient bacteremia.

Patients with heart valves that are damaged have a much higher risk factor for endocarditis. 

Endocarditis is a serious condition, and if not addressed with treatment quickly, can be life-threatening.
